There is a lot of talk these days about how owners of certain automobiles don’t use their vehicles to their true potential but assuming that damage and wear to the vehicle is the biggest deterrent, what causes more wear. Taking an off roader off road or taking a performance car to the track?

are you asking what would hurt a car more? or what is the bigger “crime” of not being used?

Hurt the car.

Taking an offroader to the track.

An offroader, off-road would probably be in more danger of catastrophic failure. But it also depends on what track/what off-road. AutoX is basically risk free, and most of the time you aren’t even “abusing” the engine or anything.

Off roading. I mean, crash at the track and it could be bad, but off roading (in the context of actually working the truck to the level it was engineered for) has a high probability of damage.

I’d say that you’re more likely to cause catastrophic damage at a track, but minor damage off road.
Also, you’ll need to do more maintenance on a track car for things like tires and brakes.

Track days with people with more money than brains.
See. Porsche 911 track day fails

Nah, Doug did ok with the hummer at the track. A track prepped car off road would be a catastrophe

Well I know a pretty rich guy here, who didn’t even know how to engage 4x4 in his 2006 Prado. But once he took it out, and the seniors trained him a bit so he doesn’t blow the clutch anyways, he comes back to the city, buys a 2008 something LR Defender because he couldn’t take the sound of gravel touching Prado’s underbelly. So I don’t know, he spent 70% of the price of Prado on buying a useless and uncomfortable LR Defender when only 25% of that money was required for Prado’s wear and tear. Also, the additional fuel costs, etc.
I have no idea how these money people operate.

It depends on the vehicle. If it was really engineered for the task (eg. Defender or LC J70 off road - Porsche 911, Ferrari 488 or BMW M4 for the track), then it’s neither. If it just want’s to bask in the glory, but is really a street car (like the Range Rover you pictured, or a BMW M235i), then tracking it will cause more mechanical wear, off-roading will cause more body wear.
At least i think so.

You’re more likely to damage an offroader off the road by banging into stuff but if you damage your car at the track it will likely be much more damage by running into the wall.

I have to disagree, sure if you decide to take your Range Rover rock crawling, things will go wrong faster, but the type of off-roading a RR was planned to do is no nearly as hurtfull as a few laps on a hot day, I’ve seen Ferraris catch fire, engines overheat, brakes cook and so many things go wrong on brand new cars in just a few spirited laps.

I guess its possible. Depends on the circumstances. Its a likelihood/consequences matrix. The likelihood of damage offroad is greater but consequences are generally lower.

And the type of offroading/track driving. Auto-X should be fine, a few laps at Interlagos in the summer would be hell. Driving around in the mud/beach if you are not a moron is ok, extreme offroading might give you some problems.

Off-roading is going to give you lots of dings, scratches, pinstripes, and dents, but is pretty gentle on the mechanicals themselves (Unless you’re doing something like rock bouncing or pre-running)
A track day is less likely to damage your car (don’t crash, mmkay?) but is going to put a lot more stress on the mechanical elements. Tires, obviously, but also brakes, cooling, engine, transmission, suspension, etc...

Come on, that's wide open for its counterpart: performance car offroad.

It’s been suggested. I concede it as more damaging than mine. Unless, of course, you roll your Wrangler end over end on the corkscrew.
